ACAR overhead conductor is a concentric stranded conductor composed of 6201 aluminum alloy stranded cables and 1350-H19 aluminum. 6201 alloy stranded wire usually consists of 1350 aluminum stranded wire as the core. In some structures, 6201 alloy will be distributed in the 1350 aluminum layer. The 6201 aluminum alloy wire of the ACAR preform is very similar to the galvanized steel core of the ACSR and is mechanically reinforced through the wire while providing a higher load rate. For the same weight, ACAR conductors have higher strength and carrying capacity than ACSR conductors.
