How does DC motor start?

Because the resistance and inductance of the armature circuit are very small, the rotor has a certain mechanical inertia. When the motor is switched on, the armature speed and the corresponding back electromotive force are very small at this time, and the starting current is very large. It can reach 15-20 times the rated current. This current will interfere with the power grid and impact the machinery and spark commutator of the unit. Therefore, direct switch start is only suitable for motors with a power of less than 4 kilowatts. If the power is too high, the motor may not start.


In order to limit the starting current of the DC motor, a specially designed variable resistor is often connected in series in the armature circuit. During the starting process, as the speed increases, the resistance of each section gradually decreases, so that the starting current is limited to a certain allowable value. This kind of starting method is called series resistance starting, which is simple to operate and is widely used in various small and medium-sized DC motors. However, due to the high energy consumption during the starting process, it is not suitable for conventional starting motors and large and medium-sized DC motors. However, due to special needs such as frequent startup of trams in some large cities, in order to simplify equipment, reduce weight, and facilitate operation and maintenance, series resistance startup methods are usually used.
