How does DC motor maintain?

Short-term maintenance


(1) Arrangement of carbon brushes

The carbon brushes on the brush holder of the DC motor commutator are generally evenly arranged. But when the number of carbon brushes needs to be adjusted, they must be rearranged. In Figure 1, there are 8 carbon brushes on the brush holder of the DC motor. If the number of carbon brushes needs to be reduced, the carbon brushes of track 1#, 8#, 2#, and 7# should be removed in turn. If the surface of the commutator has linear and groove marks, or some burn marks, in order to improve the commutation, the carbon brush should be moved to a free and better track.


(2) Adjustment of the center line of the brush holder

Motor manufacturers generally position the carbon brushes on the geometric neutral line of the magnetic poles and adjust the two directions of rotation. In some rolling mills, the direction of rotation of the motor is single. In this case, the carbon brush holder can be adjusted appropriately to improve the commutation conditions in a specific direction and reduce or even eliminate the commutation sparks.


The center line of the brush holder should be adjusted carefully and marked accordingly. Each movement of the brush holder shall not exceed 2mm. After adjustment, it shall be operated for at least 5 minutes under normal load to determine whether the adjustment position of the brush holder is appropriate. If the commutation condition becomes better, make fine adjustments based on this, and run for at least 5 minutes under normal load each time until the best commutation condition is found.


If the commutation condition becomes worse after the first adjustment, you need to adjust the brush holder in the opposite direction. For DC motors, moving the brush holder in the direction of armature rotation will reduce the effect of commutation compensation; on the contrary, if the brush holder is moved against the direction of armature rotation, the commutation compensation effect will be strengthened.


If the brush holder adjustment does not significantly improve the commutation, the carbon brush holder should be moved back to the initial mark position.
