FAQ

Why do single-phase motors need capacitors? The main reason is that there is no rotating magnetic field, so to start the motor, it is necessary to connect the start winding in series. The purpose of using a capacitor is to make the phase difference of the two winding currents 90 degrees, thereby generating a rotating magnetic field to start the motor and work.

Why can't a single-phase motor generate a rotating magnetic field by itself?

Because after the single-phase motor winding is connected to the power supply, if the start winding does not have a series capacitor, a magnetic field (pulsating magnetic field) will be generated at its axis. And this pulsating magnetic field is two magnetic fields with the same magnitude and the same speed and opposite directions. Once the motor stops running, because the two magnetic fields produce torques of equal magnitude and opposite directions, the two torques cancel each other out. Therefore, to start the single-phase motor again, a capacitor is needed to provide assistance. As long as the current phase difference between the two windings of the motor is 90 degrees, the rotating magnetic field can be generated and the motor can be started again.
